Questions such as; ‘Where you going on holiday?’ or ‘What you up to this weekend?’ are to be discouraged during hair washing.

Instead, if they get the go-ahead to reopen in early July, hairdressers are being asked to observe a ‘silence rule’.

The National Hair and Beauty Federation (NHBF) has advised members to keep chat “to a minimum” to protect both staff and customers.

It comes as the federation is urging the Government to publish full guidance as salons will need two weeks to redesign.

The National Hair and Beauty Federation (NHBF) has advised members to keep chat “to a minimum” to protect both staff and customers.

It comes as the federation is urging the Government to publish full guidance as salons will need two weeks to redesign.

In a letter to Alok Sharma, the Business Secretary, NHBF has expressed disappointment that “despite a real sense of progress” no official guidance is yet available.

One hairdressing group, meanwhile, has already told its staff not to talk to customers whilst they’re having their hair washed and head massaged.

Contemporary Salons, which has shops throughout the North East and North Yorkshire will make sure all staff have PPE.

 Customers will also take part in a ‘virtual consultation’ so the length of appointment can be assessed.

Alan Simpson, Managing Director, said salons would be looking at ‘maintenance appointments’ to begin with before making more complicated sessions available in the coming weeks.

No formal decision has been made by the Prime Minister on when salons and barber shops will be allowed to reopen.

The National Hair and Beauty Federation (NHBF) are advising members to talk to clients side by side looking into the mirror and to limit discussions.

Their advice issued to barbers and walk-in salons is: “Avoid face-to-face discussions with clients. Discussions about cut, colour and treatments should be made via the mirror while standing behind the client and kept to a minimum.

“You can lower the risk of infection if you stand or sit side-to-side rather than facing people. Consider offering online consultations to reduce the appointment time.

“This could be done before your salon or barbershop is fully open for business. This also gives you an opportunity to talk to clients about safety measures you’re taking to protect them and your team and to establish if an allergy alert test is needed.”

Other tips include urging customers not to bring coats or jackets into salons if the weather is good because the virus can stay on fabrics for days.

And salons have been encouraged to put out a slotted container for tips.

A spokesman for NHBF said: “Salons are putting their own rules in place based on common sense and trying to limit contact with clients as much as possible.”

In the NHBF letter, chief executive Hilary Hall wrote: “There is growing frustration at the continued delay in publishing these guidelines, preventing hair salons, beauty salons and barbershops from being able to fully prepare their businesses, staff and clients for reopening.”

She said as well as making necessary changes to salons, staff would also need time to be trained and given suitable PPE, as well as give advanced warning to customers.

Ms Hall added: “Salons and barbershops have been unable to trade for months, so if they are to make a financial investment in PPE, they need to be confident that they are buying the right materials and they need sufficient time to source supplies.”
